I didn't see it coming as I sat in the Reims Cathedral, listening to a performance of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis. Before that, I had walked around the church many times, always discovering new details. No wonder, the cathedral is decorated with 2,303 sculptures; I was particularly taken by the animals and mythical creatures, but what impressed me most were the two western towers.
As if lopped off at the top, their construction unfinished, which in actual fact was true. Originally, two spires had been planned, but at some point during their erection in the 14th century, the project had been abandoned.
So as I said, there I was, crouching in one of the pews, totally unaware, when I lifted my head and suddenly saw how one of the towers began to grow, far above, forming a point. It had to have something to do with the music. The tower suddenly looked like a finger pointing into space, a gothic skyrocket, and it was one. Powered by a multivoiced choir, the rocket had lifted off. With it I flew higher and higher into the night.
