At the time where I did not yet earn my own money I was often in the Stadtpark with my best girlfriends. The day before yesterday I went, as I had always done then, to the footbridge over the Vienna river and looked down at the water. Then I stepped to the edge of the pond and tipped the point of one shoe carefully onto the water; enough to scare off the ducks nearby.
A few steps up and I came to a round, stone pedestal from the middle of which an equally stone column rose: the weather and time pavilion on the banks of the Stadtpark river. This had always been our meeting point.
On the rose-sculpted balustrade, which embraced the whole foundation were, as always, markings pointing in every which way; next to them stood names of cities and their distances:
Zurich, 590 kilometers.
Lisbon, 2,300 kilometers.
Syracuse, 1,242 kilometers.
There, from the direction one would take 9,885 kilometers to get to Rio de Janeiro, Andrea came towards me, grinning.
From Algiers, 1,671 kilometers, came Lucy.
From Leningrad, 1,583 kilometers, came Cristina.
Just like before.
