You know, we just set off. Out of Palermo, heading south. It was the middle of March; the lemon and orange trees were bearing fruit for the first time that year and we picnicked in their midst; I remember Matilda, how you rolled around in the light spring sunshine.
But as day turned to dusk the question of where to stay the night loomed. We arrived at a huge hotel complex that lay directly on the sea, but it was deserted. The season hadn't begun yet. I trudged around every dorm and lodging, one of them had to be available.
Finally a door opened. An employee appeared and said “...domani...“ Obviously, he wanted to explain that the hotel would open only in the morning. He turned and walked off, then stopped. – As I'd carried you to the hotel you woke.
Later in the evening we entered the dining room, as big as a gymnasium, cold and empty. We had the choice of a hundred tables. You insisted on sitting opposite me. You wanted to be good. We waited and felt observed, not trusting ourselves to talk. Your little face got longer and longer, your tiny mouth fell open.
You could hear how the lift doors opened softly and then a clippy noise like dog claws flitting over the tiled floor. A tiny little Jack Russel trotted around the corner towards us. You promptly slipped from your stool. Even at three years old you loved dogs.
